I have a Hotpoint HTN40 Cooker hood

  • you dont need carbon with a cooker hood that extracts to the outside. You only need a carbon when you have a recirculating cooker hood. e.g. do you have a grill on the outside of the kitchen wall for the fan? By Russell - cumbria - 21 July 2015
  • Yes I always put both filters in together. When you have a fry up for the family check the filters - these are cheap enough to change before they get too blocked. By Trisha T - Clacton on Sea - 30 July 2013
  • I would say yes, our cooker hood came with both installed. By Bomber - Oxfordshire - 16 November 2010

If your cooker hood is recirculating back into the room you do need a carbon filter.

Answer this question

I purchased a universal cooker hood filter in foam and charcoal. However on removing the old filter there was also a paper filter. I've now sent for the paper one as well. Is this ok to use all three? Ie. Paper first then foam and finally carbon. Thanks.

The paper filters are designed for grease and the foam filter is for absorbing the smells, you would not normally use all 3 so check your user guide for your model to be sure as it depends on whether the hood is venting outside or recirculating.

The paper filters are designed for grease and the foam filter is for absorbing the smells. Not using the grease filter would quickly saturate the foam filter and reduce its efficiency at removing odours from the air.

If your hood is recycling the air instead of venting outside then it should have carbon filters attached to the motor. It would be more effective to replace these than trying to fit this filter as your appliance is not likely to be designed for this.

These filters can be cut to size and used in many extractors.

Are there supposed to be clips or do they simply sit on the 2 Frames.

This type of filter is used in cooker hoods as shown in the How to Video. If your hood uses a metal panel grease filter this product is not suitable.

It does not matter but if you can see from under the hood it is easier to know when you should change it.
