What You Will Need:
- Sump Hose
- Screwdriver
- Water Pump Pliers or Maul Grips
- Blanket or Towel
Step 1 - Switch Off Your Appliance
Safety First! Please ensure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before starting any repair.
Step 2 - Remove The Base Plate (Not Always Necessary)
The machine in this video doesn't have a base plate on it - which means the procedure is made slightly easier. Obviously if your machine does have a base plate, you'll need to remove that - and you can see this procedure on the following video How to Replace the Base Plate or Kick Panel on a Washing Machine.
Step 3 - Ensure Machine Is Empty Of Water
Before you place the machine on it’s side you need to make sure that there's no water left in it. The way you can do that is by putting the machine onto a spin and drain cycle. Then once it's finished, just take the dispenser drawer out and make sure there's no water in there.
Open up the flap at the front, and proceed to empty out any last remnants of water that are left in the machine, which you do via the filter drain hose (you can just empty that into a cup or a saucepan).
eSpares Top Tip: After doing all of this, it’s also worth just checking the filter for any debris that might be collected in there as well.
Step 4 - Place The Machine On It’s Side
Now that the machine is empty of any water you need to disconnect it from the water supply, and you do this by disconnecting the fill hoses at the back of the machine - followed by unplugging it from the mains as well.
Once I've done that I just need to lean it down onto its side. If it's a particularly heavy machine it might be a good idea to get someone else to help you do it - and also if you have a hardwood or laminate floor, it might also be a good idea to get a blanket or something else that is suitable for the machine to be laid down on to protect it.
Step 5 - Disconnect The Sump Hose From The Pump And Tub
You will now be able to see the sump hose underneath. The next thing we're going to do is disconnect the sump hose from the pump, which you do by un-clipping the clip.
Next to do is undo the clip that holds the sump hose onto the tub. Now with that clip loosened you should be able to pull the sump hose off the tub. Next, you need to unscrew the pressure chamber that's attaching it to the tub above.
Step 6 - Replace The Sump Hose
The final thing we need to do to free the sump hose, is to un-clip the clip here. Now the sump hose is free, we can check for what's inside. Sump hoses do tend to get blocked with things such as hair grips, bra wires and sometimes even socks as well.
As you can see, this sump hose isn't in a particularly good condition so I'm going to replace it with a new one. I can just use the old clips to fit the new one back on.
