How to Fit Spool & Line in Your Black & Decker Strimmer

If you find that your grass trimmer's spool and line are in need of replacing, whether due to the line running out or the spool itself breaking, you'll need to replace them to get your appliance back in action. Here, we're going to run you through how to replace the grass trimmer spool and line to get your grass trimmer up and running again. What you will need:

Finding your model number

To make sure you buy the correct replacement parts for your particular appliance, you'll first need to know the model number. This is usually displayed on a sticker or data plate at the base, side or back of the appliance. The model number may be a combination of letters and numbers, and it could also include characters such as a dash (-) or a slash (/).

Safety first!

For your own safety, always make sure your appliance is switched off and unplugged from the mains before beginning any repairs or part replacements.

Replacing the spool, line and cover

Step 1: Remove the old assembly

If you are replacing the entire spool assembly including the cover, all you need to do is replace it. First, remove the old assembly by squeezing in the release tabs on either side and pulling away.

Step 2: Ready the line

Before fitting the new assembly, you'll first need to prepare the line. Remove either side of the line from the spool cleats and feed them through the slim eyelet openings on either side of the cover. (In the picture below, we're doing this on the old assembly rather than the new one just as a demonstration.)

Step 3: Fit the new assembly

Then fit the new spool, line and cover by simply slotting the assembly into place. It should click onto the trimmer to let you know it's securely in place.

Replacing the spool and line only

Step 1: Remove the cover

If you are only replacing the spool and line but keeping the cover, you'll need to remove the old spool from the cover after removing the old spool assembly from the trimmer.

Step 2: Fit the new spool and line

Once the old cover is empty, slot the new spool and line into place inside the cover.

 

Step 3: Ready the line

As with replacing the spool, line and cover, you will need to prepare the line. Remove either side of the line from the spool cleats and feed them through the slim eyelet openings on either side of the cover.

Step 4: Fit the assembly

With the lines in position, you can now fit the new spool and line inside the old cover back onto the trimmer. The assembly should simply click into place.
