The drum bearings sit at the back of the machine and allow it to spin smoothly. So if you're machine is making an awful racket when it spins- one customer described the sound as a cement mixer going into over drive!- then you'll need to replace the bearings. You can also tell by how much movement there is between the drum and the machine. If the drum moves round quite a bit then you need to replace the bearings.
