There appears to be a float in the drain hose, it is slightly smaller than the circumference of the hose. If I disconnect the hose from the trap spigot and push the float back the pressure is released and the water will flow out into a bucket, why is the flot blocking the water flow.

The drain hose should not have anything in it as that will stop the machine from draining correctly.
Can you reduce the length of the drain hose by cutting to the length required and refit the rubber end ? If this can be done how do you remove the rubber end and refit it. 1 Answer

It is possible to reduce the length of the hose but difficult to join and stop the joint leaking.
