"Active" 3D glasses feature battery-powered crystal screens in each lens, which switch between opaque and transluscent too quickly to tell, to block the view from one eye at any one time, while retaining the illusion that both eyes can see correctly. The screens synchronise with your 3D TV which switches between showing images for your left and right eye when the corresponding lens lets the image through.
