We believe the slider adjusts the air bypass to control the power from the airflow delivered to the brush bar. The air flow is reduced on deep pile carpet the brush may stop, On hard floor more air can be drawn through the cleaning gap.

If being used mainly on hard flooring we would recommend a floor tool with a brush around its edge like Stock Number: ES470542
Can you advise me as to how often the head should be dismantled to remove hair & fluff build up on the rotary brush & turbine rotor?
