I've just watched video regarding replacing door seal, Looking at my washing machine door seal the outer part is quite solid almost like a hard rubber yet in the videos it looks reasonably easy to fold inside the drum. I haven't attempted to remove retaining clip yet though, is it that which makes it quite firm?

The door seal is fitted to the cabinet by a band which does make the seal appear solid, once the band has been removed the seal will be more flexible and will fold into the drum.
Just successfully replaced seal on my Hotpoint HE8L 493 WM using your part and very helpful video. Turned machine back on at mains to test it, power comes in and lights up as usual but whichever programme I choose it just stops less than a minute into whichever cycle it's on. Have I somehow confused the controls by stopping the machine mid -cycle (when it was leaking ) and then turning off from mains to do the job? How do I reset it? Also drum feels very stiff in new seal but not sure if that's how it's meant to be.

The drum should not be stiff unless it is rubbing on the new seal so check if it is fitted correctly, we have a vide to help www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYPqpjLV7s4&t just copy and paste into your browser.

There is usually at least one drain hole at the bottom to allow water to empty from the bellows fold back to the drum.
