Freezer has excessive amount of ice and door will not close. Is this down to the door seal?

This is possible; empty the appliance and allow it to completely defrost, then if there are any gaps in the seal warm it with a hair dryer and gently stretch the material to allow the gap to close. If the seal is damaged, replace it.
