I have just purchased this switch for my hoover HNC180-80 I still have the same problem, the switch does not latch when pressed

Try turning the power off and removing the switch from the front facia. if the switch latches and unlatches when operated it suggests there is a problem with the button or facia preventing 'full travel' of the switch shaft.
