our unit works very well but the display is very dim. I wish to be able to trim the brightness up

Many clock displays dim as they age and components start to fail. It is similar to an old car not having enough in the battery to start it when cold. It is not possible on most clocks to increase the brightness and if it has deteriorated you will have to replace the clock module.
