I dropped a tin over the knob, and the burner doesnt switch on since then, it sounds like is going to, but the flame doesn't remain, which is the problem?

My cooker is a Hotpoint, with the knobs situated next to the burners.

    Try swapping over with one of your other knobs. If this resolves the problem then the knob is at fault. We cannot confirm whether this universal knob will fit, so an option could be to purchase the original knob for your model number.
