as there are separate sensors in the fridge and freezer compartments how will I know which type to purchase

With an electronic controlled fridge freezer there is a lot more components that can cause a problem then just a thermostat. The sensors generally are very reliable, and most problems are caused by a build up of ice on the freezer evaporator blocking air flow. Check for ice build up and if found fully defrost before checking the defrost heater attached to the evaporator.
