this will be the third time my grill element has gone in 2 1/2 years am i just unlucky or might somthing else be causing it

Fat splashing onto the element will cause 'hot spots' and weaken the element and may lead to failure. try and avoid excess fat splashing and ensure the pan is drained and cleaned regularly.
