Surely fitting this Y piece to your washing machine hot and cold water supply will allow the cold water to flow back into the lower pressure hot pipe. It would be advisable to fit non return valves to both hot and cold I would think.

The purpose of this adaptor is to connect both hot and cold feed pipes from the machine to a cold water supply. if no water is fed to the hot supply the machine may stop waiting for it to fill. If it fills with cold the machine will heat the water as required.
