Got the oven element out no problem but I can't get the clips to stay on the new one, they keep slipping off. Do you have to tighten them, and if so, how?

We assume the 'clips' you refer to are the electrical connectors to the element. Remove them from the element and gently squeeze them with a pair of pliers and check they now fit tightly. If you accidentally crush them with too much force you will need to replace them. These connectors are available from Maplins or most car accessory stores.
