This element was replaced in my DeLonghi Professional cooker in 2009 by a Comet engineer. The grill part of the element is no longer working. Why would this happen so soon - after 5 years?

Grill elements in particular can be damaged by fat spitting on the surface and causing a hot spot. If the appliance is used very frequently in a large family or semi professional environment this life span of the element is not unusual as the element is likely to be exactly the same quality as in most domestic cookers.
