The thermostat on the fridge plays an important role in keeping the fridge running to its full potential. If you're experiencing temperature control issues with your fridge, the problem is likely to be due to a faulty thermostat.
If you need to replace the thermostat but are unsure where to start, there’s no need to panic. We’ll talk you through how to successfully replace the thermostat without pulling out your hair.
This video shows an example on how to remove or replace the part on a typical machine, some models may be different but the procedure should be similar.
What You Will Need
- Thermostat
- Screwdriver
- Pliers
- Device to take photos (i.e. camera)
Step 1 - Safety Advice
Safety first! Please make sure that you have switched your appliance off at the mains before starting your repair.
Step 2 - Access The Thermostat
Well, we need to get to the thermostat of course! To do this we need to remove three things. Firstly the control knob needs to be taken off, which you can easily do by placing a flat-head screwdriver behind it to gently lever it off. This will then present you with the shaft of the thermostat, which is held in place by a nut - just use some pliers to loosen this nut.
The final thing to remove is the screw-hole bung - and the screw that is located behind it. You will now be able to slide the thermostat assembly and gently lift away from the wall of the fridge.
Step 3 - Removing Connectors
Remove the top cover above the thermostat. If you push the thermostat out of its space, you will be presented with the connections. Time for an eSpares Top Tip - take a quick photo of these connections, so that you know how they are to be fitted to your new thermostat later on. Proceed to remove the spade connectors from the thermostat (Note: Some might have barbs on them, which may need to be pushed down with a screwdriver as you release them)
Step 4 - Replace Capillary Sleeve Onto New Thermostat
Once the spade connectors have been removed from the thermostat, the next thing to do is to remove the capillary from the wall of the fridge (check that this will come out freely without excessive force, as on some fridges the capillary might be attached to something else at the other end). Remove the sleeve from the capillary, and then unwind your new thermostat capillary before placing the sleeve over it. Proceed to feed the capillary back into the fridge, and then reconnect the thermostat (using your previous photo as reference)
Step 5 - Reattach Thermostat
Keep going, you’re nearly there now…place the thermostat back in the hole, and screw the nut on to the shaft from the other side so it is held in place. Replace any cables where they should be (ensuring they are not trapped), and finish off by replacing the cover over the thermostat and putting the complete thermostat assembly back on the wall of your fridge.
Step 6 - Reconnect Knob
Final stage! Replace the screw bung, before placing the knob back on the shaft - being very careful to make sure that they're correctly aligned.
Congratulations - you have now successfully been able to replace your fridge thermostat! You can now get back to being able to have the temperature in your fridge regulated once again! You now have the knowledge that you have fixed the thermostat all by yourself (with a little help from eSpares of course!)
