Electric Lawnmower Keeps Cutting Out
Lawnmowers are considered your landscaping buddy when it comes getting your lawn to look in tip top shape. A well-groomed garden is a beautiful area where you can relax after a long day and enjoy sipping on your favourite drink.
Sometimes faults can occur especially when you consider how hard your mower works. If your lawnmower is cutting out sporadically, the most likely reason can be the motor or power cable. Follow our step by step diagnosis guide below to swiftly get your mower performing at its best again.
Cable
Unlike their petrol counterparts, smaller electric mowers require power cables to operate! When there is no power the blades cannot spin. The main culprits which may result in your cable becoming faulty can be:
- Internal damage from constant flexing and pulling during use.
Safety First! Prior to beginning any repair, please disconnect your appliance from the mains.

Start Switch
If your lawnmower fails to start because the switch is not responding, it will not be a good sign especially if you’ve got a barbecue planned. A defective switch can cause intermittent motor power or sometimes no power at all, meaning the grass you were supposed to cut last month will only grow longer.

Motor
The motor is the powerhouse of the mower which is responsible for rotating the blades. Electric lawnmowers may cut out for two main reasons:
- A faulty power switch or a loose cable connection.
- An overheating motor can cause the thermal cut out to trip.
If you have checked and confirmed the cables and connections are intact, the motor is the most likely offender especially if the mower cuts out after using it for a while.
Safety First! Please make sure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before beginning any repair.
- Inspect the air vents near the motor housing and check they are clear from grass clippings to allow cool air to flow into the motor.
- The excess strain caused by cutting very tall grass too quickly may overload the motor causing it to cut out and damage.
- If the motor continues to cut out after a few minutes use and the mower is not being forced through long grass, the motor may be faulty and need replacing.
