How to Replace a Grill Element in an Electric Oven

You will know If your grill element is blown, as it may not turn on at all, or it may have uneven spots and patches while in use.

If you need to replace the element in your grill you’ve come to the right place. If you don’t know where to start there’s no need to panic. We’ll talk you through how to successfully replace it without damaging your grill - or singeing your eyebrows!

So if your oven’s showing the above symptoms, it looks like the heating element may need replacing. 

Is your grill element fitted from the inside or from the back? For grill elements that are fitted from the inside of the oven, you simply have an easy task of just removing the screws that are holding the element in place - it really is that easy! 

However, if you find that your grill element is fitted from the back, like on the Diplomat ADP 3101 model shown in this video, then the complete oven will need to be removed from its unit.

Don’t worry though, it really is not as daunting as it sounds

This video shows an example on how to remove or replace the part on a typical machine, some models may be different but the procedure should be similar.

Safety First! Please make sure that you have switched your appliance off at the mains before starting your repair.

You need to prepare the cooker to be moved…to do this you will need to first of all remove any shelves and supports that are located in your cooker. Following this, it is time to tackle the removal of the door.

On most oven doors, there will be a latch on either hinge, that when moved into the open position, will allow you to close the door up and lift it out.

If required it’s time to get the cooker out from its unit now! Depending on your model, you might need to unscrew yours, but with this specific model from Diplomat, we are going to lift it straight out.

If doing this, please proceed carefully - as you need to avoid the flex from escaping out of the back of the oven. Place the cooker on the floor carefully now.

We are not going to be able to replace the grill element if we can’t get to it are we? Well, we are now going to make our way to that elusive element.

We do this by removing the top and rear panels from the oven…and to help with this task you will need a suitable screwdriver

Now we have access to the back of the oven, we just need to pull the insulation away, and there you are…the back of the grill element has now shown itself to you.

Time for an eSpares Top Tip now - take a photo of how the element is currently wired, so you can check you have wired the new element in the same way.

Using pliers, you can now remove the wires from the element (but be mindful not to damage the actual wires here).

Using the correct screwdriver, proceed to remove the screws that are currently holding the element in place. Well done so far - you have successfully removed your old element, now all you need to do is fit the new one!

Let’s get that new element fitted…firstly, just make sure that the element is the right way around and in the correct position.

All you need to do now is to fit the screws that you had previously removed, followed by then ensuring that you rewire the element correctly (this is where your photograph comes into play).

Putting your oven back together again! You have done a great job of dismantling your oven in order to be able to fit your new element, and it is now time to put the pieces back together again so it can resemble something you can call an oven!

All you need to do is proceed to attach the top and rear panels that you had taken off before and refit into the housing if required.

Finally, it’s time to get that door on - make sure that the slot on the hinge sits perfectly onto the hole in the main part of the oven. To finish off, just flip both latches back over so that the door can be closed.

Congratulations - you have now successfully been able to replace the grill element on your oven!
