How to Fix a Faulty Washing Machine Mains Filter

The mains filter on a washing machine helps prevent the electrical interference, that is generated by the motors, from passing through the cables and disturbing other devices.

If this fails it can cause tripping of the RCD in the fuse board or blow the fuse in your plug.

Safety First! Please make sure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before beginning any repair.

To access the mains filter inside the machine the next thing you need to do is to remove the top of the appliance by undoing the screws located at the back. Once removed you can carefully take off the top of the appliance.

Now that you have the top of the appliance off, you will be able to see the mains filter, and there may be a few tell-tale signs that it is faulty.

These signs can include bulging in the filter, burn marks or scorch marks, signs of smoking - or there may well be liquid at the bottom of the filter. However, a mains filter can still be faulty even without displaying any of these signs.

Easy enough to disconnect from the cabinet, you just need to undo the screws at the back to release it.

Once the mains filter is disconnected from the cabinet, it's easy enough for you to replace it with the new one. Simply disconnect each electrical connector one at a time and replace it to the new mains filter in the same position.

eSpares Top Tip: If you want to be sure of connecting it correctly, you can always take a quick photo of how the connections were set to the old one before you start to disconnect them.

With all the electrical connections transferred to the new mains filter, you can then reattach it to the cabinet.

With the new mains filter fitted, you can now proceed to reattach the top of the appliance.
