If the control knob on your tumble dryer is damaged, isn't clicking when you turn it, or simply isn't working properly, the problem will lie with either the control knob itself, the control knob spacer or possibly the control module. In this article, we're going to show you how to replace all three of these parts to get your appliance back in action once more.
For this particular guide, we'll be using a Bosch tumble dryer. However, this process should generally be the same for most tumble dryer makes and models.
What you will need:
- Torx head screwdriver
- Flathead screwdriver (optional)
- Control knob and spacer
- Control module (if necessary)
Finding your model number
Whichever parts need replacing, it's important to know your tumble dryer's model number. This number will help ensure you buy the correct parts for your particular model of appliance. The model number is usually displayed on a sticker or data plate located behind the door frame or behind the filter flap at the bottom of the appliance, and it will likely be a combination of letters and numbers. It could also include characters such as a dash (-) or a slash (/).
How to replace a tumble dryer control knob on a Bosch tumble dryer
Let's get started! To learn how to fit a new tumble dryer control knob, along with the control knob spacer and the control module, either watch our video or follow our step-by-step guide below.
Safety first
Remember, you should always make sure your appliance is switched off and unplugged from the mains before carrying out any repairs or replacements.
Step 1: Remove the top panel
First, you'll need to remove the tumble dryer's top panel. Using a Torx head screwdriver, remove the screws that keep the top panel held in place at the back of the tumble dryer. Then lift the top panel away and place it safely to one side.
Step 2: Remove the fascia
Next, you'll need to remove the fascia. First, remove the water container from the top of the dryer by sliding it out.
You can then remove the fascia by simply lifting it up. The clips will come free, but the fascia will still be connected to the machine by the control module wires and electrical connections.
Step 3: Disconnect the control module
Before disconnecting the control module, first take a photo of the electrical connections. This will help you reconnect all of the wires in the correct positions later on.
Once you've taken a photo of the wires and electrical connections, you can go ahead and disconnect all of the electrical connections from the control module.
Step 4: Separate the control module and fascia
To separate the control module from the fascia, you will need to unclip the several clips that hold the two parts together. These clips may be a bit tight, so you can use a flathead screwdriver to help you release them if necessary.
Once separated, you can place the control module to one side. Try not to touch the circuit board on the control module as you do this, as it can be easily damaged.
Step 5: Replacing the control knob and spacer
Next, remove the control knob and spacer. The spacer will simply lift straight out of the back of the fascia...
Whereas you will need to push the control knob out of the front of the fascia from the back.
To fit the new control knob, you can simply push it into place in its opening at the front of the fascia.
Then fit the new spacer by slotting it onto the back of the control knob.
Step 6: Refit the control module
Now it's time to refit the control module. If you are replacing the control module, this is where you will want to fit the new one in place of the old one. First clip it back into the inner side of the fascia, making sure it is the right way around as you do so.
Then reconnect the control module to the electrical connections you removed earlier. Use the photo you took earlier for guidance to make sure all the wires connect to the correct places.
Step 7: Reattach the fascia
To reattach the fascia, first hook it into place at the top. Then click it into place at the bottom, making sure you don't pinch or trap any of the wires as you do so.
With the fascia reattached, you can then return the water container by slotting it back into place.
Step 8: Refit the top panel
Finally, refit the top panel by slotting it into place and returning the rear screws you removed earlier.
