If your grill element isn't turning on, heating up or is damaged, your grill will no longer be able to do its job properly. As such, the part will need replacing. Fortunately, our guide on how to replace the grill element on a Rangemaster cooker is here to help you get your grill up and running again.
Safety first!
Always make sure your appliance is switched off and unplugged from the mains before carrying out any work.
How to replace the grill element step by step
Let's get started! To learn how to replace the grill element on your Rangemaster cooker, simply watch the video or follow our step by step guide below.
Finding the model number
To get the right replacement element for your oven, you will need to know your appliance's model number. This can be found on a sticker or data plate, usually behind the oven doors around the frame. If you can't find it here, check the back or sides of the appliance. The model number usually consists of a combination of letters and numbers and could also include characters such as a dash (-) or a slash (/).
Step 1: Remove the access panel
To begin, unscrew the access panel at the back of the cooker using a screwdriver. This will allow you to access the wiring at the back of the grill elements.
Step 2: Photograph the element wiring
You will now be able to see the back of the two grill elements. On the cooker we're using for this demonstration, both elements are damaged so we're going to replace both. Before going any further, take a photo of the wiring so you know how to reattach everything once you've replaced the elements.
Step 3: Disconnect the element wiring
Disconnect the two wires connected to the front of the element(s). However, you should leave the earth wires (the green wires as pictured below) connected to the inner ends of the elements. Be careful as you do this, as there are sharp edges on the cooker around this area.
Step 4: Remove the baffle plate
Next, head around to the front of your cooker. The grill elements can be found inside the grill, but they're held in place by a bracket behind the baffle plate. The baffle plate is the long, narrow plate connected to the grill roof at the front of the grill. Remove this plate by unscrewing the two screws that hold it in place.
Step 5: Remove the silver bracket
Behind the baffle plate, you will see a silver bracket. This holds the front of the elements in position. Again, you can go ahead and remove this by unscrewing the two screws that hold it in place.
Step 6: Place cardboard under the grill
Now it's time to reach inside to access the grill elements. Before doing so, lay a piece of cardboard under the grill to protect your hands and arms.
Before moving on, let's take a look at the grill elements. In the cooker we're using for this demonstration, we can clearly see the elements sagging. This is because the elements are made of metal, and so heat causes them to weaken and sag over time. As such, they need replacing.
Step 7: Remove the grill element(s)
To remove a grill element, use a long screwdriver to remove the screw holding the grill element in place at the back of the cooker. Pull the element towards you while you are unscrewing the screw, then take it out of the grill once it is free.
In the picture below, you can see that the element is severely damaged as the metal is split, exposing the insulation beneath. Because of this, it is unsafe for use.
Step 8: Fit the new grill element
Place the screw you removed from the back of the old element into the same bracket on the new element. Then, place the new element into the grill and, using a long screwdriver, screw it into place.
Step 9: Refit the silver bracket and baffle plate
With the replacement complete, you can now refit the silver bracket, securing it into place with the two screws you removed earlier. Once the silver bracket is in place, refit the baffle plate in the same manner too.
Step 10: Reconnect the electrical wiring
Head to the back of your cooker and, using the photograph you took earlier for guidance, reconnect all of the coloured wiring to the correct parts of the grill elements.
Step 11: Refit the access panel
Finally, finish by reattaching the access panel over the wiring, screwing it back into place with the screws you removed earlier.
And there you have it! Your grill element(s) should now be successfully replaced and working properly once again.
However, grill elements are just one part of your cooker that requires maintenance. The rest of your appliance should also be well-maintained and looked after to keep it working optimally... and that includes keeping it clean.
