Over time your gas hob can accumulate grime, suffer damage and start to look worn. Because of this, it requires some regular TLC to keep it clean and in good shape. In this article, we run you through the steps to take to maintain your gas hob and keep it looking as good as new.
Safety first!
Before you get to work, make sure that the hob is switched off and completely cool to avoid burning or injuring yourself.
How to maintain your gas hob step by step
Let's get started! For our tips and guidance on maintaining your gas hob, either follow the step by step guide or watch the video tutorial below.
Find your model number
Before getting to work on your hob, you're going to want to find the model number for any spare parts you might need. This can usually be found on a plate underneath the hob, or on the side or back of the appliance, and is usually a combination of letters and numbers. It could also include characters such as a dash (-) or a slash (/). If you can't find your model number, don't worry. Simply head over to our finding model numbers page and we'll give you a hand.
Step 1: Replace the control knobs
If the control knobs have been burnt or damaged, they can easily be replaced. Simply place your fingers under or around the damaged knob and work it off the spindle, pulling it away from the appliance. While you're doing this, be careful not to turn the gas on. Then slot the replacement knob onto the spindle, making sure it is also in the correct "off" position as you do so.
Step 2: Other replaceable parts
There are also other parts of your gas hob that you can easily replace if they get lost or damaged. These include the pan holders on top of the hob, as well as the burner caps and the flame spreaders beneath them.
Step 3: Scrape the hob clean
While regularly giving your hob a good wipe down is necessary, there is some grime and filth that can't be removed so easily. Using a hob scraper, remove any burnt-on residue, being careful with the blade as you do so and sliding it away when you're finished.
Step 4: Clean the hob
Finally, make sure you give the hob a thorough clean with a hob or oven cleaner and cloth. For the best results, we recommend using a cleaner made specifically for hobs rather than a general oven cleaner, as these will achieve the best results on glass, ceramic and induction hob surfaces.
And there you have it - how to maintain your gas hob. Hopefully, your hob should now be looking as good as new!
While you're cleaning your hob, don't forget that your entire cooker will need a deep clean every now and then too. Otherwise, you risk bad smells coming from your oven, as well as food potentially being spoiled by burning filth and grime residue.
