Benefits of replacing motor can include increasing your knowledge of vacuum cleaner repairs, better performance and money. Most people would instantly consider booking an engineer, take it to an expensive repair shop or buy a new machine, but of course there is another way!
In this article we have detailed how to change the motor in a Dyson DC04. An older model of cleaner, this step by step article will run you through the basics to a motor replacement.
What You Will Need:
Step 1 - Safety Advice
Safety First! Please ensure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before starting any repair.
Step 2 - Accessing the Motor
The motor is housed underneath the post motor filter, this means you are first going to need to remove the canister. With that to one side, you can now use a flathead screwdriver to remove the post motor filter and cover
Underneath the filter there should be several torx head screws, to continue with the repair you’re going to need to remove eight of these screws.
Step 3 - Disassembly
Next, we need to remove the top half of the motor assembly cover and to do this gently work it free from the rest of the body of the vacuum.
Make sure you take note that the belt which drives the brush roll is also housed here, so you’re going to have to work the motor out from underneath it - you need to be aware that the belt is going to be quite tight.
Step 4 - Motor Removal
With the motor housing removed, using a flathead screwdriver, use it to “pop” off the clips. With the housing removed, you need to take off the retaining ring - simply pushing the spindle on the motor will free it from the housing. Now you can gently pull it through.
Step 5 - Changing the Motor
Now the motor is connected to the power cable by two connections, it is important to take note which connections are connected to which terminals.
eSpares Top Tip: Take a photo of the wires and where they are located for no confusion when reconnecting them back onto the new motor.
With the connections removed, you can put the old motor to one side and then just reconnect the terminals to the new motor. Don’t forget to put the mounts from the old motor onto the new one, both are found on the top and the bottom of the old motor..
Now the old mounts are in place you can locate the new motor into the motor housing and you can do this by locating the "nibs” inside the housing into the holes on the top mount.
Please Note: It’s very important to not catch any of the cables while I‘m doing this, and to make sure the motor’s sitting nice and firmly inside the housing.
Step 6 - Reassembly
Now that’s done turn over the motor and replace the locating ring onto the top of the housing. Once in place put the new motor into the vacuum,begin to fit the cable into position, and simply put everything back together remembering to tighten the screws so nothing is loose.
All done...well sort of this was only to show you how to fit a new motor to a Dyson DC04. However it is important to remember that once you’ve fitted the new motor you’re going to need to reattach the drive belt around the motor spindle.
